The poetess

Janina BrzostowskaJanina Brzostowska (1897-1986) was born in Wadowice, Poland. She has studied at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and obtained her B.Phil, degree in Polish and Romance literatures. She has published three novels (each in several editions) and nearly twenty volumes of poetry. The latter include: Płomień w cierniach (Flame in Thorns); Giordano Bruno; Zanim noc (Before the Night); Czas nienazwany (Unnamed time); Obrona Światła (Defense of the Light); Pozdrowienie (Greeting); Szczęścia szukamy (Searching for Happiness); Eros; Śpiew przedwieczorny (A Song Before Evening).
Poems of Janina Brzostowska have appeared in translations into Czech, English, French, German, Italian, Slovak and Spanish. She has translated into Polish from Old Greek for the first time the entire poetry of Sapho, from German poems of Reiner Maria Rilke, Guenter Kunert and Georg Maurer, from Czech work of Jaroslav Seifert, from Slovak poetry of Jan Kostra and from Bulgarian that of Veselin Hanchev.
Janina Brzostowska lived in Warsaw, Poland. She was one of the Founding Fellows of the International Academy of Poetry in Cambridge, England; Member of PEN Club and sometimes Polish delegate to its International Meetings; Member of the Union of Polish Writers.
